What is a walking frame?

A walker is a medical device for assisting people to walk and is used to support people who do not have enough balance to use a cane or crutches. With both hands on the walker, you can move forward without fear of falling. A walker can be a walking frame that you lift after each step or a rollator that you push.

Most users of walkers are older people. However, a walking frame can be needed at any age in life, for example because of certain fractures. These walking aids are used in some rehabilitation programmes and there is a walker for children.

Reimbursement for a rollator or fixed walker is provided by social security. It is a medical device that can be obtained with a prescription from a doctor or physiotherapist. Some people also buy a walker without a prescription (not reimbursed).

What are the different types of walkers

A wide variety of walkers and rollators are available on the market. They fall into specific categories of adult walkers, although some are more versatile.
