What is a transfer chair ?

An elderly dependent or disabled person may need to be moved around the home by a third party. A transfer chair is a wheelchair that is pushed, using handles at the back of the backrest.
It is a medical device for PRMs (people with reduced mobility) and is not designed for long journeys. Transfer chairs or wheelchairs are small and light, so they are easy to handle.

When to use a transfer wheelchair?

A person moves the wheelchair transfer chair right next to where the dependent person is sitting. Once the transfer to the wheelchair is complete, the dependent person can easily be moved to another location.

Transfer chairs are also used to take a disabled person or a frail senior citizen from the house to the car and then from the car to a specific location. But outside the home, transfer wheelchairs are used for longer periods, for example to get through a medical facility or airport.

Main types of transfer wheelchairs

Various brands manufacture transfer chairs for disabled or elderly dependents, such as Invacare and Dupont Medical. There are many different models. Ideally, a transfer chair is ultra-light and foldable. It is often necessary to carry it in the boot of a car. However, manufacturers offer models that are transfer chairs and, at the same time, walkers with wheels or rollators.

A person with reduced independence can use a 2-in-1 rollator/transfer chair, accompanied by another person to enjoy the benefits of walking. If they have difficulty or are tired, they can use the walker converted into a transfer chair. This involves unfolding a seat and a footrest. There are different systems. For example, there are foldable 2-in-1 walkers that act as a walker when folded and as a transfer wheelchair when unfolded.

The choice depends mainly on the independence of the person. Some can walk or use a wheelchair transfer board. A transfer board allows you to slide from bed to chair, for example, or to transfer from wheelchair to car yourself.

More traditional models, such as the Stan transfer wheelchair, offer a choice of seat widths. They can have accessories, mainly storage pockets or safety straps. Finally, folding transfer chairs are designed for professional use, for example in the hotel and tourism industry.

The advantages of a wheelchair

An ultra-light transfer chair (less than 8 kg) can be used in all kinds of places. It avoids having to carry a person with reduced mobility, which is both dangerous and unpleasant for them and their carers. Although some journeys are made on stretchers, a transfer wheelchair is always preferred where possible. For obese people, there are bariatric transfer chairs. While most transfer chairs have a weight capacity of about 100-120 kg, bariatric models have a weight capacity of at least 200 kg..

Reimbursement of a transfer chair

A medical transfer chair is eligible for Social Security reimbursement if it is considered a VHP (vehicle for the physically disabled). It may be a folding transfer chair. It must be a push chair, for a disabled person who cannot use a manual or electric wheelchair.
