What is an electric scooter for the disabled?

An electric scooter for the disabled is a 3 or 4-wheeled vehicle with good stability. It is intended for short trips, often in the city. However, it can be adapted to different types of ground. An electric scooter battery for the elderly or disabled has a greater or lesser range and the maximum speed is around 5/10 km/h. It is also called a mobility scooter or PMR scooter, but it is used by elderly people who are sufficiently independent.

A PRM electric scooter for what purpose?

Electric scooters for disabled or elderly people with a loss of mobility are intended for everyday use: shopping, going to the doctor, visiting relatives... Many local trips become possible with mobility scooters. You regain your autonomy and it is also a way to avoid falls.

The different types of electric scooters for seniors and the disabled

A folding senior electric scooter can be easily stored in the boot of a car or at home. Alternatively, there is the dismountable disabled electric scooter. Without tools, you can dismantle the scooter for easy transport.
The all-terrain disabled electric scooter has stronger wheels and more equipment. It can legally use certain traffic lanes, such as streets and cycle paths, with traffic lights and indicators. With an all-terrain electric scooter for the disabled or senior citizens, you can consider riding in more places, such as in the countryside or on cobbled streets.

Disabled electric scooter 3 or 4 wheels?

The majority of electric scooters for people with reduced mobility have 3 or 4 wheels. Choose a 3-wheeled electric scooter for the disabled if you intend to use it mainly indoors , for example in shopping centres and malls. If you use it outside more often, prefer the 4-wheel electric scooter for the disabled , with which you can turn more easily. And with 4 wheels, your senior scooter will also be more stable. That said, there are 4-wheel electric scooters for disabled and elderly people that are relatively easy to use indoors.

Choosing a medical electric scooter for the elderly

If you are interested in purchasing a PRM electric scooter or medical scooter, here are some useful questions to ask :

  • How much weight does the scooter support?

  • What range do you need (10, 20, 30 km, more...)?

  • Do you need a folding or collapsible electric scooter?

  • What are the adjustment options (seat, backrest, armrests...)?

  • Do you need accessories for the road, such as mirrors?

  • What basket capacity would be ideal for your shopping?

  • Where do you plan to use the medical scooter (indoors, outdoors, both)?

Prices of electric scooters for seniors

An electric scooter for the disabled can be found cheaply, starting at around €1,000, but if you want some comfortable PRM options, you should expect to pay at least €1,500 to €2,000.
As it is more of a medical device than a scooter, social security offers reimbursement. Reimbursement for a disabled electric scooter may be possible according to your country. Take into account the insurance of your electric scooter for disabled or elderly people. It is compulsory
